Do you know that the Surfers who truly love the Oceans do not embrace also do not love wake-surf, not just because the waves created by machines are not challenging or comparable to real ocean waves, more importantly is that we clearly understand the serious impact of power noise and mechanical oil on Marine life. Do you know that animals in the ocean are increasingly threatened by noise and oil pollution caused by human beings.
In Hong Kong, summer is the peak season for yachting and water entertainment, and the advantaged environment here makes water entertainment numerous especially wake-surfers everywhere. Actually the only area in Hong Kong relatively suitable for real surfing seems to be Big-Wave-Bay, but the waves and water clarity aren't perfect there. And wake-surf as entertainment can be achieved in almost any calm sea, unlike real surfing which has to wait for waves and be tricky, so it blooms everywhere in Hong Kong waters, that the water environmental quality was polluted.
What they don’t get is that the Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins have largely disappeared from Hong Kong's waters in recent years, some of them injured by jet skis and power boats, and polluted by noise and marine pollution. They're very sensitive to sound, that’s their primary sense and that's their downfall in Hong Kong. With their soft skin, dolphins can also experience skin irritation from the oil, and eating tainted fish could poison the mammals. I hope we can raise public awareness of what impact human entertainment can have on other species. I wish human entertainment were not based on the suffering of other creatures. If you love Ocean, if you love surfing, then let’s following the real waves and go swimming with the fishes.
